Volunteer Role Description


1.  Role Details

Role Title:

Music for Health Volunteer

Grantham, Barrowby Road


2.  Role Purpose

The Music for Health Volunteer will facilitate music therapy through singing for patients as part of their Day Therapy visits to our centres. An ability to sing, play and provide own instrument for accompaniment and facilitation of groups would be advantageous.



3.  Your Support and Your Team

You will be supervised in your role by the Clinical Services Manager and the Senior Clinical Services Manager. You will be supported in your role by the Volunteer & People Development Manager.




4.    Key Duties


To have the ability to support with music therapy


To provide musical instrument for music therapy


To develop key areas of interest in relation to music eg singing


To develop an ongoing programme of music therapy for the year.


To attend mandatory training and supervision.


To uphold the principles, policies and values of St Barnabas Hospice.


To maintain absolute confidentiality at all times.



5. Essential Skills


  • Experience and love of music or singing to enable an individual approach to patients needs.
  • Ability to facilitate groups
  • To be flexible and sensitive to patients needs on a day to day basis.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • A willingness to attend ongoing training and receive supervision and mentoring.
  • Adhering to the principles and values of St Barnabas Hospice.
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy and understanding to the needs of others.
  • Ability to respond to the needs of patients / carers in a respectful way with consideration to their own values and beliefs.
  • Ability to respond to emotionally challenging situations in a calm and responsive manner.
  • All volunteering requires a commitment both in time and in motivation. It is essential that you are consistent, trustworthy and reliable.

9. Outline of Working Conditions

  • Works within an environment which complies with the Trust Health and Safety Policy.
  • Will have contact with distressed patients and carers, and occasional exposure to  aggression.
