2.  Role Purpose

To maintain the gardens at the St Barnabas Louth site. Our teams of volunteer gardeners ensure that the gardens are relaxing and pleasant spaces to be used by patients and carers. Volunteers will usually volunteer at one of our sites. Garden volunteers usually volunteer weekly from March – October.

 

3.  Your Support and  your Team

The Garden Volunteer is supervised and supported in their role by the Facilities Manager (staff).  The Volunteer & People Development Manager (staff) has overall responsibility for volunteers.

 

4.    Key Duties

1.

Maintain gardens, grass cutting, weeding, planting, pruning, potting out, and other garden related tasks.

2.

To ensure that duties are carried out safely with consideration for service users.

3.

To prepare the garden for special events, e.g. Summer Fair.

4.

To ensure that tools and equipment are in good working order.

5.

To attend mandatory training, team meetings and volunteer support meetings.

6.

To uphold the principles, policies and values of St Barnabas Hospice.

7.

To maintain absolute confidentiality at all times.

 

5. Essential Skills

 · Experience of gardening or a willingness to learn.

· An ability to demonstrate empathy and understanding to the needs of others.

· An ability to at times to respond to emotionally challenging situations in a calm and responsive manner.

· A willingness to attend ongoing training and receive support and mentoring.

· Adhering to the principles and values of St Barnabas Hospice.

· All volunteering requires a commitment both in time and in motivation.  It will be essential that you are consistent, trustworthy and reliable.  

  

6. We will provide you with

7. Outline of Working Conditions

 · Works within an environment which complies with the Trust Health and Safety Policy.

· Volunteers will generally be working outdoors.

· Exposure to some lifting and moving of loads.

· May have contact with distressed patients and carers and occasional exposure to aggression.
